Botox and Dysport

What is Botulinum toxin A and how does it work?
BOTOX® (onabotulinumtoxin A) and Dysport® (abobotulinumtoxin A) are both Botulinum Toxin A, a highly purified protein derived from the bacterium, Clostridium Botulinum. The proteins inhibit the release of the chemical signal between the nerve and the muscle, temporarily reducing muscle activity. The Botulinum Toxin A is used in small quantities to target the muscles whose repeated contractions from frowning and squinting and other expressions over the years lead to dynamic wrinkles such as frown lines and crow’s feet. Relaxation of the muscles of expression will lead to visible smoothing of your crow’s feet, frown lines, and other targeted lines of expression. Results last from three to six months. The effect gradually wears off, allowing the dynamic wrinkle to return.

What are BOTOX® and Dysport® used for?
BOTOX® and Dysport® are mainly used to treat dynamic wrinkles in the upper third of the face, such as glabellar “frown” lines, crow’s feet, horizontal forehead lines, and brow shaping. However, other areas of the face and neck can be treated cosmetically, including vertical lines on the nose, vertical lip lines, chin dimpling, gummy smile, masseter hypertrophy, and platysmal bands (vertical bands of neck). They have been used for many years to treat muscle spasticity associated with certain medical disorders. They are also indicated for chronic migraines, and excessive axillary sweating, and bruxism (teeth grinding). BOTOX® and Dysport® are not as effective on so-called static wrinkles, which are better treated with dermal fillers and other modalities.

Botox® and Dysport® are both approved by the FDA for cosmetic and medical treatments. Since the FDA first approved BOTOX® 1989 for blepharospasm (uncontrollable blinking) and strabismus (misaligned eyes), further medical indications have been added, including treatment of disorders involving muscle spasticity, chronic migraines, and most recently excessive axillary sweating. Botox® was first approved by the FDA as a cosmetic treatment for glabellar lines in 2002 and lateral canthal lines (crow’s feet) in 2013. Dysport® was first FDA-approved in 2009, and is currently improved for treatment of moderate to severe glabellar lines, cervical dystonia and upper limb spasticity.

How does BOTOX® / Dysport® work?
BOTOX® and Dysport® are injected into a targeted facial expression muscle, blocking impulses from the nerve to the muscle, thereby preventing its contraction, which in turn causes the overlying skin to become smoother, with fewer lines and wrinkles. Very small amounts of the BOTOX® or Dysport® are injected in precisely targeted muscles. The effects work only on the injected muscles, leaving the untreated muscles to contract in a normal fashion, allowing normal facial expression and sensation to be unaffected.

How do BOTOX® and Dysport® differ?
In regards to safety, time to on-set, and efficacy, there is minimal difference between these two treatments. Dysport® has an onset of about 2 – 3 days and peaks by 7 days. Botox®, a slightly larger molecule, has an onset of about 3 – 4 days and peaks between 7 – 14 days. Some people claim to get better results with one over the other, but in our experience, there is very little significant difference. Some people can build up immunity to one product. In this case, we recommend trying the alternative product. When comparing price per unit of BOTOX® vs. Dysport®, it is important to note that the units are not equivalent. You will need 2-3 times as many units of Dysport® for an equivalent effect as with BOTOX®. The price per unit of Dysport® is proportionally lower, so in they end, they are generally the same price.

Are Botox® and Dysport® cosmetic treatments safe?
Botox® and Dysport® are a prescription medication and should only be performed by a skilled provider under the direct supervision of a physician. Although serious side effects due to spread of the toxin away from the local injection site have been reported, No definitive serious adverse event reports of distant spread of toxin effect have been associated with cosmetic or dermatologic use of at the recommended doses.

Side effects of Botox® and Dysport® are infrequent and generally mild and temporary. The most common side effects of BOTOX® and Dysport® treatment include bruising and swelling at the injection site, headache, and flu-like symptoms. Incorrect placement of Botox® or Dysport® can affect adjacent muscles leading to eyelid drooping, asymmetry of the brows, crooked smile, and dry eye or excessive tearing. which are due to the effect of the toxin and therefore may persist until the toxin effect wears off. A recent study examined results of over 20,000 minor cosmetic procedures (including Botulinum Toxin A) and found less than 1% complication rate (performed by experienced providers) and no major complications, demonstrating the extremely low risk associated with minor cosmetic procedures when performed by an experienced provider.

Are BOTOX® / Dysport® treatments painful?
BOTOX® and Dysport® are injected directly into the muscle that underlies the dynamic wrinkle. The muscle injections are given with a very small needle so there is only minimal, brief discomfort. The entire procedure takes about 10-15 minutes. Ice can be used prior to injection to minimize any discomfort.

How many BOTOX® / Dysport® treatments will I need and how long will it last?
Usually, one treatment is all that is needed, and the effect typically lasts for 3-4 months and may last longer in certain individuals. The treatment may be repeated as often as desired. With new clients, we recommend a follow up visit at approximately 2 week to assess the results and assure optimal results.

How long before I can return to my usual activities
Botox® and Dysport® are often referred to as “lunchbreak” procedures, meaning that clients usually can return to their normal activities immediately. To assure that the product doesn’t migrate before being taken up by the muscle, we recommend no strenuous exercise, no massage or manipulation, and staying upright for 3 – 4 hours after the procedure. Please see our Botulinum Toxin A Pre & Post Care Instructions prior to receiving any treatment.

Dermal Fillers + Injectables

What is hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronic acid is a sugar molecule that exists naturally in almost all living organisms. It binds water and can act as a lubricant and shock absorber in movable parts of the body such as joints. The role of HA in the skin is to deliver nutrients and help the skin retain its natural moisture and softness.

What is Juvederm XC®?
Juvederm XC is a non-surgical filler that instantly smooths out the lines along the sides of your nose and mouth. It can provide natural-looking results for up to a year with optimal treatment. Juvederm XC is made from a modified for of hyaluronic acid, manufactured using proprietary HYLACROSS™ technology.

What makes Juvederm XC® different from other dermal fillers?
Juvederm XC is the only hyaluronic acid filler FDA-approved to last up to one year with optimal treatments and it was studied in all skin types. HYLACROSS™ technology provides a high concentration of cross-linked hyaluronic acid.

Is Juvederm XC® treatment painful?
Injections may cause some discomfort during and after the injection. Juvederm XC® is formulated with lidocaine for a more comfortable treatment experience. We may also choose to numb (anesthetize) the treatment area to further minimize discomfort.

How long does treatment usually take?
The injection process can be performed during a brief office visit.

How long does the correction last?
Correction is temporary and may last up to one year with optimal treatment. Touch up injections with about half the amount of gel is usually needed to maintain optimal results.

What is Belotero Balance?
BELOTERO BALANCE is an injectable filler that is used to smooth moderate-to-severe etched-in lines and wrinkles on your face. Upon injection, it quickly and evenly integrates into your skin.

Is this like a botulinum toxin treatment?
No, BELOTERO BALANCE acts in a totally different way. It fills in areas within the skin to reduce the depth of wrinkles, lines, and folds. The skin remains mobile and flexible, with a natural look, feel, and movement.

What is the difference between Belotero and other fillers?
It is a hyaluronic acid injectable filler designed to integrate into facial skin tissue. The unique manufacturing process for BELOTERO BALANCE yields a soft and cohesive gel that, once injected, instantly fills the skin to help smooth moderate-to-severe etched-in lines and wrinkles. While the product is versatile enough to handle moderate nasolabial folds (smile lines around the mouth), it may be an ideal option for treating delicate areas such as etched-in smile lines and vertical lip lines (thin lines that appear above and around the lips).

How quickly does Belotero work?
Immediately upon treatment, BELOTERO BALANCE helps smooth etched-in lines and wrinkles, such as vertical lip lines above and around your lips.

How long does it last?
Individual results may vary, but BELOTERO BALANCE may last about 6 months or more.  Some factors that affect how long it lasts are the amount of product used and the area it is injected into. In areas that experience a lot of movement due to eating, talking, and smiling, the product may not last as long as other less active areas.

What is Restylane®?
Restylane is a soft injectable gel consisting of stabilized, non-animal hyaluronic acid. The gel is tissue-friendly and closely resembles the hyaluronic acid that exists naturally in the body. It is long lasting but not permanent.

How does Restylane work?
By replenishing the skin’s supply of hyaluronic acid, Restylane rejuvenates and adds volume to the skin, instantly diminishing the appearance of lines and wrinkles, and giving a natural softer look. Treatment with Restylane does not affect facial expression.

When will I see results and how long will they last?
The result of a single treatment can be seen instantly. Duration depends on many factors, such as the individual’s skin type, lifestyle and age. After the initial treatment, follow-up sessions are normally recommended around every 6 to 12 months depending on the individual and the treatment. A treatment of the lips lasts about 6 months.

What does the treatment involve?
Restylane is injected into the skin in small amounts using a very fine needle. The gel provides natural volume to smooth away the appearance of lines and wrinkles, enhance facial shape, or create fuller lips. The treatment is quick, typically taking about 30 minutes.

How is Restalyne® different from Restalyne Perlane®?
Restylane Perlane gently fills deeper wrinkles and folds, such as the nose-to-mouth lines and frown lines, resulting in a softer facial expression. We will help determine which hyaluronic acid product is best for you, based on your specific needs.

What is JUVÉDERM VOLUMA™ XC?
Voluma injectable gel is a smooth, colorless hyaluronic acid (HA) gel that contains a small quantity of local anesthetic (lidocaine). Formulated with VYCROSS™ technology, JUVÉDERM VOLUMA™ XC is a smooth-gel filler that produces long-lasting results at the treatment site.

What does JUVÉDERM VOLUMA™ XC treatment do?
As you age, the cheek area loses its youthful shape. The cheeks flatten out and the skin may begin to sag. JUVÉDERM VOLUMA™ XC injectable gel is designed to temporarily reverse these signs of aging. It is a gel that is injected into the cheek area to lift the skin. It temporarily adds volume to the cheek area and results in a smoother contour and more youthful appearance to the face.

Do the injections hurt?
Injections may cause some discomfort during and after the procedure. JUVÉDERM VOLUMA™ XC injectable gel contains lidocaine to reduce injection-site pain. We also numb (anesthetize) the treatment area with a topical or injected numbing agent to further minimize discomfort.

What should I expect following the procedure?
Within the first 24 hours, you should minimize strenuous exercise and exposure to extensive sun or heat. Exposure to any of the above may increase temporary redness, swelling, and/or itching at the injection site. If there is swelling, you may place an ice pack over the swollen area. The most common side effects are temporary reactions at the treatment site such as tenderness, swelling, firmness, and lumps/bumps. These side effects generally last 2 to 4 weeks.

Will I need more than one treatment to achieve my desired result?
We will consult with you to determine the best course of treatment given the desired result. Many clients receive a touch-up treatment 1 month after initial treatment
in order to achieve the desired result.

How long does the correction last?
While individual results may vary, results often last up to two years in a majority of clients treated with JUVÉDERM VOLUMA™ XC. After this, repeat injections are usually needed to maintain your desired result.

What is Radiesse®?
Radiesse is FDA-approved for correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds or smile lines, corners of the mouth, pre-jowl fold, and chin wrinkles. Radiesse is made of tiny calcium-based microspheres suspended in a water-based gel. The calcium microspheres are similar to minerals found naturally in the body so allergy testing is not required.

How does Radiesse® work?
Once injected, Radiesse plumps the skin to give the appearance of a smoother surface. Over time, Radiesse works to stimulate the body to produce collagen naturally. Ultimately the body absorbs the product and leaves behind the natural collagen for long-lasting results.

What makes Radiesse® different from other leading dermal fillers?
Radiesse is the only dermal filler available composed of calcium-based microspheres, and has been shown to stimulate the natural production of collagen, for results that may last up to a year or more in many patients

What is Sculptra®?
Sculptra Aesthetic is used to correct shallow to deep facial wrinkles and folds such as nasolabial folds or smile lines, lines framing your mouth (marionette lines), and chin wrinkles. It is made of a synthetic material called poly-L-lactic acid that is absorbed naturally by the body — and has been used for years in dissolvable stitches.

How does Sculptra work?
Sculptra Aesthetic works within the deep dermis to help replace lost collagen. Its reinforced collagen structure provides a foundation that gradually restores the look of fullness to deep facial wrinkles and folds. This can provide a refined, more youthful looking appearance that can last more than two years.

Are there any side effects?

Side effects may include injection site pain, redness, bruising, bleeding, or swelling. Small bumps under the skin that can sometimes be noticeable when pressing on the treated area may also occur. Larger lumps, with or without inflammation, have also been reported.

What is Bellafill®?
Bellafill® is a smooth collagen-based dermal filler with polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) microspheres. The collagen gel in Bellafill®provides immediate volume and lift to correct the wrinkle and/or acne scar. The PMMA microspheres remain in place and create a base that provides structural support for smoother-looking skin.4

What are the microspheres in Bellafill® made of?
The microspheres are made of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), a biocompatible material that has been used in medical implants for 65 years.

How does it work?
The collagen in Bellafill® provides immediate volume and lift. Over time, the collagen is reabsorbed while the PMMA microspheres remain in place and create a base that provides structural support for smoother-looking skin.

How long does it last?
Satisfaction and effectiveness for the correction of nasolabial folds have been established through 5 years. Effectiveness for the correction of acne scars has been proven through 12 months.

How Does Asclera® Work?
Asclera® is a sclerosing agent that is injected into the vein. It works by damaging the endothelium, the cells lining the inside of blood vessels. This causes blood platelets and cellular debris to attach to the lining of the vessels; eventually, cellular debris and platelets cause the blood vessel to clot. Over time, the clotted vein will be replaced with tissue.

How long is each Asclera® session?
A typical sclerotherapy session lasts 15 to 45 minutes. One injection is usually administered per inch with multiple injections per session. Following treatment compression stockings or support hose should be worn continuously for 2-3 days and for 2-3 weeks during the daytime. Repeat sessions may be necessary. If additional treatment sessions are required they are usually repeated by 1-2 weeks.

What should I expect after being treated with Asclera®?

Maintain graduated compression

  • 2-3 days after treatment of spider veins
  • 5-7 days after treatment of reticular veins
  • For extensive varicosities, longer compression treatment is recommended
  • Post-treatment compression is necessary to reduce the risk of deep vein thrombosis.

Encourage walking

  • 15-20 minutes immediately after treatment
  • Daily for a few days

What should I avoid after receiving an Asclera® Injection?
For two to three days following the treatment, avoid:

  • Heavy exercise
  • Sunbathing
  • Long plane flights
  • Hot bath or sauna

Are there any possible side effects to Asclera® treatments?
Yes, they may include:

  • Severe allergic reactions have been reported following polidocanol use, including anaphylactic reactions, some of them fatal. Severe reactions are most frequent with use of larger volumes (> 3 mL). The dose of polidocanol should therefore be minimized. A doctor should be prepared to treat anaphylaxis appropriately.
  • In rare cases, formation of small “burns” or ulcers form, usually due to leakage of Asclera®into the skin. They heal in time, but may leave a scar.
  • Inadvertent perivascular injection of Asclera® can cause pain. If pain is severe, a local anesthetic (without adrenaline) may be injected.

You should tell your doctor about all the medicines you are taking, including:

  • Prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins and herbal products

You should not be treated with Asclera® if you:

  • Have a known allergy to polidocanol
  • Have an acute vein or blood clotting (thromboembolic) disease
  • Are pregnant or nursing

Lasers

What is Sciton technology and how does it work?
ELOS is the first and only technology to simultaneous harness the power of bi-polar radio frequency (RF) and optical energy (either light or laser). This platform helps overcomes the safety limitations of standard IPL and improves the effectiveness. Although each pulse seems simultaneous, the RF energy actually follows the IPL pulse, and is preferentially absorbed by the preheated areas targeted by the light therapy — a less intense light energy is needed for the same results as IPL alone, resulting in less burning risks and improved results. The ELOS advantages in safety and efficacy are well documented in many clinical papers.

How many ELOS Skin Rejuvenation treatments will I need?
The number of ELOS IPL treatments you will need will depend on your skin type, the condition you are treating, and the results you want. Treatments are repeated every 4 – 6 weeks for an average of 3 – 5 treatments.

How does the ELOS Skin Rejuvenation treatment feel?
The sensation is often described as a snapping rubber band feeling, which lasts for a fraction of a second, followed by a warm sensation for a short time afterward. Most people tolerate the treatment well without any topical anesthetic.

What will I experience after each ELOS Skin Rejuvenation treatment?
Some mild, temporary redness is common, but most people return to work or normal activities immediately after treatment. Brown spots temporarily become darker before being removed by the body’s natural processes. Exfoliating techniques can help to shorten this process. Makeup can be applied immediately after treatment.

How do Exilis® Skin Tightening and Exilis® Body Sculpting work?
Exilis® is an FDA-approved non-invasive monopolar radio frequency (RF) technology. Compared with bi-polar RF devices, which can only penetrate 2 – 4 mm, Exilis can penetrate up to 3 cm below the surface, affecting both skin and subcutaneous fat anywhere on the face and body. Power and cooling adjustments determine how deeply the RF penetrates. Compared with other RF devices on the market, Exilis is unique in its ability to measure temperature levels to be sure they are optimal for the treatment.

What results can I expect with Exilis® Skin Tightening?
Elastin fibers provide scaffolding for the skin, determining its degree of firmness and elasticity. Over time, this intricate fiber network loosens and unravels, altering the appearance and function of the skin. Exilis® delivers therapeutic levels of thermal energy, which both directly shrinks and tightens collagen fibers (responsible for immediate effects) as well as disrupts the collagen helical structure and stimulates fibroblasts to produce new, healthier collagen over the next several months.

What results can I expect with Exilis® Body Sculpting?
Exilis® Body Sculpting is used to promote the elimination of fat. The laser’s energy targets deeper subcutaneous fat deposits. The heat injures the fat cells, causing their cell membranes to release fat cell content (triglycerides). The injured fat cells become unable to uptake more fat and many of the fat cells do not recover, which eliminates these cells as a fat storage site. Post-treatment exercise and hydration will promote the elimination of the fat.

Am I a good candidate for Exilis Skin Tightening or Body Contouring?
Exilis Skin Tightening is excellent option for those with mild to moderate skin laxity who want to see improvement in skin laxity, texture, fine lines and wrinkles without pain, down-time, or high cost of other more invasive procedures. It can be used anywhere on the body, but is most commonly used to address loose skin around the eyes, lower face and jaw line and neck. If you have more severe laxity, other options such as Ultherapy or surgery may work better for you. Exilis® will not address pigmentation irregularities, but works synergistically with other treatment modalities such as ELOS Skin Rejuvenation or Fraxel® Re:Store.

You are a good candidate for Exilis® Body Contouring if want to improve stubborn, localized fatty deposits where diet and exercise have plateaued without the expense, risk, or down-time of surgery or invasive procedures. Common “trouble spots” addressed with Exilis are abdominal ‘pooch’, ‘love-handles’, ‘muffin-top’, back fat or ‘bra bulge’, arms, ‘saddlebags,’ ‘cankle’ ankles, and cellulite on thighs and buttocks.

Are Exilis® treatments painful?
Most patients find Exilis treatment a pleasant experience.  Application of radiofrequency feels warm to hot, but not painful.  Treatments last 15 – 30 minutes.  There are no associated scars, and no recovery time.

Is there any preparation or down-time associated with Exilis® treatments?
There is no significant down-time associated with Exilis® and it is safe to be performed at any age, on any skin type, and at any time of the year. The only preparation needed is to hydrate well prior to Exilis® Body Contouring treatments for best results. There are no post-care instructions except continued hydration and exercise.

What is Ultherapy?
Ultherapy is a safe, non-surgical ultrasound treatment that counteracts the effects of time and gravity on your skin. Ultherapy uses the body’s own regenerative response to gently and gradually lift skin on the eyebrow, under the chin and on the neck, and smooth lines and wrinkles on the décolletage.

Is Ultherapy safe?
Yes. The FDA-cleared Ultherapy® procedure has been used safely in over 350,000 treatments worldwide. Ultrasound energy has been used safely in the medical field for more than 50 years.

How does Ultherapy Work?
Ultherapy deposits focused ultrasound energy deep beneath the skin at the optimal temperature for collagen regeneration. The treatment jumpstarts a natural process, known as neocollagenesis, to produce fresh, new collagen. Ultherapy doesn’t involve any creams, fillers or toxins; it just relies on your body’s own collagen-building process for natural, noticeable results.

Can Ultherapy replace a face lift?
Ultherapy treats the deep foundational layer addressed in cosmetic surgery, but won’t duplicate the results of a facelift. Ultherapy is a great alternative, however, especially for those not ready for surgery or for patients looking to extend the effects of cosmetic surgery.

What should I expect during the treatment?
As the ultrasound energy is delivered, you will feel tiny amounts of energy being deposited to precise depths, indicating that the collagen-building process has been initiated. The length of the treatment will depend on the area being treated and your individual treatment plan. A face and neck procedure typically takes 60-90 minutes, while a chest treatment takes approximately 30 minutes. Comfort levels vary from person to person, but the sensation only lasts while the ultrasound energy is being delivered.

Is there any down-time with Ultherapy?
With Ultherapy, there is no downtime. After your procedure, you can resume your normal activities immediately, without having to follow any special post-treatment measures. Your skin might appear flushed at first, but the redness should disappear within a few hours. Some patients experience slight swelling, tingling or tenderness to the touch, but these are mild and temporary in nature. Other, less common post-procedural effects may include temporary bruising or numbness on small areas of skin.

When will I see results? How long will they last?
After your Ultherapy® Treatment, you may see some initial effect, but the ultimate results will take place over 2-3 months, as your body naturally regenerates collagen. Since the procedure stimulates your own collagen production, how long the results last really depends on you. The treatment produces new collagen on the inside, but your natural aging process will dictate how long that translates into visible results on the outside.

How Many Ultherapy treatments will I need?
Most patients only need one treatment. However, based on the degree of skin laxity, the biological response to ultrasound energy and the individual’s collagen-building process, some patients benefit from additional treatments. Because skin continues to age, future touch-up treatments can help patients keep pace with the body’s natural aging process.

How does laser hair removal work?

Laser or light energy travels through the skin and is selectively absorbed by melanin pigment in the hair follicle and shaft. Hair follicles in the active growth phase absorb the light best. The energy damages the hair follicle, which impairs its ability to grow hair. With time, the hair in the damaged hair follicles will fall out, resulting in a smoother appearance and less hair growth. Since melanin is the target for laser and light energy, the amount of melanin in the skin, as well as the thickness of the hair follicle will determine which technology will give the most effective and safest results. We proudly offer two advanced technologies from Sciton:

Forever Bare BBL™

Forever Bare BBL™ from Sciton is a revolutionary technology in hair removal that uses an advanced application of Broad Band Light (BBL). Instead of applying its energy all at once (like traditional hair removal devices), Forever Bare BBL™ sends multiple lower energy pulses at a high repetition rate, resulting in extremely even heating of hair follicles, minimizing missed areas, and providing a treatment that is safe, fast, efficacious, and comfortable. Forever Bare BBL™ technology also uses highly efficient skin cooling (via the thermoelectrically cooled sapphire plate on the handpiece), which provides continuous surface cooling, even at maximum power, to keep the skin cool and comfortable before, during and after treatment.

ClearScan YAG™

ClearScan YAG™ is the gold-standard technology for darker skin types and tanned skin. The risk of laser hair removal in dark skin is typically damage to the epidermis or the outermost layer of the skin. The darker the skin, the most it can absorb the light and laser energy, acting as a target for the laser. The Nd:YAG laser creates a wavelength that is longer than other lasers used for laser hair removal. For this reason, it can penetrate deeper into the skin, bypassing the skin’s surface where damage may occur. As with the Forever Bare BBL™, the ClearScan YAG™ uses superior skin cooling system which keeps the skin cool and therefore protected, for a more safe and comfortable treatment for darker skinned individuals.   The Nd:YAG laser is absorbed best by coarse hair. Therefore, permanent hair reduction in individuals with dark skin but finer hair (such as those of Southeast Asian descent) will be more challenging to treat and may not be able to achieve permanent, long-term removal of fine hairs. Many individuals in this category still prefer lasers due to the elimination of irritation and pigmentation frequently seen with shaving, waxing or threading.

How many laser hair removal treatments will I need?

Typically 6 – 9 treatments are required, depending on your hair type and skin type. A hair follicle is most susceptible to the effects of the laser or light when it’s in the active growth phase. Since each hair follicle goes through a growth cycle independent of other hair follicles, it’s not possible to affect all hair follicles during the same treatment. Spacing of the Forever Bare BBL™ or ClearScan YAG™ hair removal treatments every 4 – 6 weeks apart takes advantage of the timing of the typical hair cycle to try to maximize the number of hair follicles affected. Individual results may vary depending on the individual’s hair type, certain medications, and hormone levels. Even before the treatment series is complete, the hair usually becomes finer and most sparse, improving ingrown hair formations, irritation, or hyperpigmentation associated with shaving, waxing, or threading.

Am I a good candidate for Permanent Hair Reduction?

With our new Forever Bare BBL™ and ClearScan YAG™ available, laser hair removal may be used successfully for individuals of all skin and hair types. The number of treatments needed to achieve the desired outcome will depend on a number of factors discussed above. Prior to treatment, you should discuss any new medications with us as certain photosensitizing medications might affect your treatment. Some common photosensitizing medications include tetracycline, ibuprofen, naproxen, isotretinoin (Accutane), retinoids, oral contraceptives, and hydrochlorothiazide.

How do I prepare for Permanent Hair Reduction Treatment?

Avoid tanning or self-tanners prior to the treatment. You may shave or trim hair in the area. It is important to avoid waxing or plucking prior to your treatment because removing the hair from the follicle removes the target.

What can I expect during and after treatment?

Many clients come to us with concerns about discomfort associated with laser hair removal. Do not let past experiences or others’ experiences with painful laser hair removal techniques deter you from getting your desired results! Discomfort will vary with individual and area treated, but both new technologies have been extremely well tolerated by our clients.   With Forever Bare BBL™, you may briefly feel a warm or “rubber band snap” sensation with each pulse as the light is absorbed by the target. With the ClearScan YAG™, you will hear a rapid succession of pulsing sounds and will feel as sense of heat and slight snapping on the skin. The treatment itself can vary from 5 to 60 minutes depending on the size of the area being treated. There is no downtime, so you can reapply makeup and resume your normal daily activities immediately. Occasionally, there can be a transient redness that usually resolves within a day or two. You should avoid direct sun exposure to the area or wear sunblock in sun-exposed treated areas for several days after the treatment.

What is laser vein therapy and how does it work?
Laser vein therapy is the gold standard way to remove spider veins. The laser involves using a focused beam of light with a wavelength that targets the red pigment of blood. The laser heats up the small vein and destroys it, but does not damage nearby skin tissue. Over a period of 4-6 weeks, the vein is reabsorbed by the body and disappears. We offer complimentary consultation to help determine if you are an appropriate candidate for laser vein therapy and can give you information on what to expect during the procedure and what kind of results to expect.

What is tattoo removal?
Painting of the human body goes back to the beginning of recorded history, and thus the removal of unwanted tattoos has probably been around that long as well.   As tattoos gain in popularity, the variety of techniques used to apply tattoos has grown and thus the source of the ink, where on the body the tattoo is applied, colors and designs used, even the depth into the skin can vary dramatically.  There are also a number of techniques to remove tattoos. Not all devices are created equal and successful outcome depends on a variety of factors.  Thus the approach that we may take to remove your tattoos may be as unique as the tattoo itself.

Are Q switched lasers effective to treat tattoos?
The Q-Switched Laser has become the gold standard treatment for across all colors of tattoo removal. By creating a very short high-energy pulse, the tattoo ink is thermo-acoustically broken up into minute particles that the body can readily absorb.   As the laser attacks the tattoo, a light grey “frosting” appears on the tattoo, a signal that the appropriate energy was applied and the removal process will begin.

How does the Q switched laser work?
Removal of tattoos depends on the principle of selective photothermolysis; when the proper wavelength is applied the ink absorbs the energy preferentially, causing it to break down. The body’s natural healing processes remove broken down pigment over time. Surrounding tissue is largely unaffected, but not entirely spared, so tattoo removal is typically uncomfortable for patients. Numerous sessions are required to maximize results.

How does laser tattoo removal work?
The laser is directed at the ink in your tattoo for a fraction of a second. The laser energy passes harmlessly through the outer layer of your skin to target the tattoo ink directly. The laser fragments the ink into smaller components, which allows your body to absorb the ink and process it naturally.

Can all the colors be removed from my tattoo?
Most colors can be removed completely. While some colors require more treatments than other colors, even the most challenging colors will usually fade to a point where they’re nearly impossible to see.

Will I see a change in my tattoo after each treatment?
Because each person and every tattoo is unique, everyone responds to laser tattoo removal treatments differently. Some people notice a distinct visual change with every single treatment, while others people may not see any change for a few treatments. When you follow our clinical staff’s advice, you will ensure the best results as soon as possible.

Will I have a scar after treatment?
When you follow your clinician’s aftercare instructions, the chances of scarring are nearly nonexistent. However if you have any preexisting scarring (for example, if the tattoo artist who initially inked you had a heavy hand and scratched your skin too deeply) those scars will remain as our lasers only remove ink, not scars.

How do chemical peels improve the skin?
Chemical peeling is a procedure that aims to accelerate skin exfoliation by the use of chemical substances resulting in renewed, healthier looking skin and more uniform complexion.

Who can benefit from SkinMedica® peels?
SkinMedica® peels address the visible skin imperfections that result from skin aging and sun exposure, such as fine lines and wrinkles, uneven skin tone and texture. Peels also address skin tone unevenness that can be caused by acne scarring or pigment changes. SkinMedica® offers a range of different strength chemical peels — Vitalize®, Rejuvenize™ and Illuminize® — that licensed medical professionals can choose from to provide the optimum treatment for their patients.

How do I decide which particular peel is most beneficial for me?
During the initial consultation, your skin care professional will evaluate your skin condition and recommend the appropriate peel regimen based on your needs.

Who is an ideal candidate for a Vitalize Peel® treatment?
Vitalize Peel® is appropriate for patients with mild-to-moderate skin imperfections that result from skin aging and sun exposure, such as fine lines and wrinkles, uneven skin tone and texture. Vitalize Peel® treatments also address skin unevenness that can be caused by acne scarring or other pigment changes.

Can Vitalize Peel® be performed on patients with dark skin?
Vitalize Peel® is appropriate for all skin types.

How do I prepare for Vitalize Peel® treatment?
Any procedure or products that may increase skin sensitivity should be avoided before your Vitalize Peel® treatment. Ask your physician or skin care specialist for details.

What should I expect during the Vitalize Peel® procedure?
The complete treatment is expected to take 45 minutes, which includes ample time to address any questions you may have, and a discussion on your post peel care. The actual application procedure is approximately 20 minutes. Tolerance to the procedure varies from patient to patient. Tingling or burning sensations are normal and expected reactions. A handheld fan can be used during the procedure to minimize discomfort, which usually subsides in a few minutes.

How will my skin look right after the Vitalize Peel®?
Vitalize Peel® can leave yellowish tinge on the skin, which is expected to last no longer than 2-3 hours. Mild to moderate redness is expected after any type of chemical peel procedure. The extent of redness varies from patient to patient. The face may appear redder than usual for some time after the treatment and completely resolves after the peeling is complete.

Will I peel after receiving a Vitalize Peel® treatment?
Your skin care professional will provide you with in depth post-procedure instructions. Your post-peel regimen will include SkinMedica® Sensitive Skin Cleanser or Facial Cleanser, moisturizer appropriate for your skin type, and Daily Physical Defense® Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 30+.

How can I protect my skin post peel?
Since the new skin is more susceptible to sunburn, extra precautions should be taken to limit sun exposure for at least one week after the peel. It is imperative to use a broad spectrum sunscreen product with an SPF of 30 or higher.

After the Vitalize Peel® treatment, when can I resume my regular skin care regimen?
You can resume the use of your regular treatment products after you have completely finished peeling.

What results can I expect after the Vitalize Peel®?
After the Vitalize Peel®, patients will notice an improvement in the appearance of overall skin condition, diminishment in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, smoothness of skin texture, more even skin color, and improved skin clarity.

How often can I have the Vitalize Peel® treatments?
Vitalize Peel® treatments can be repeated every 3-4 weeks.

How many treatments are required?
Multiple treatments may be required to achieve desired results. The number of treatments is based on initial level of skin damage, and can vary from 3 to 6. The effect of the peel is cumulative and results are favorable when the peels are used in conjunction with SkinMedica® daily product regimen.

How do I maintain optimal results following Vitalize Peel®?
Vitalize Peel® is part of a skin management program that includes SkinMedica® home-use products. To maintain optimal results achieved with the Vitalize Peel® treatments, patients should use a daily skin care regimen recommended by a physician or skin care specialist.

Will I peel after receiving a Rejuvenize Peel™ treatment?

How is the VI Peel different from other peels?
Before VI Peel, the deeper the peel, the more painful, the more downtime, the better the results. VI Peel is painless, yet produces dramatic, visible results in just days with little downtime.

How many treatments are required to get results?
A single VI Peel will achieve significant repair and add a healthy glow to the skin. It is a true, restorative and painless repair of damaged skin including sun damage and acne. Best of all, it is a great “preventive maintenance” peel for younger skin that has no visible signs of damage.

What can I expect during and after the peel?
During the peel treatment, patients will feel a slight stinging sensation for a few seconds, which subsides completely almost immediately. The peel is applied topically numbing the skin after the first pass. Some patients feel more comfortable using a fan or cold air breeze.

The peeling associated with the VI Peel is a light, fluffy peel that will start on day three and generally be finished by the end of day four. The peeling is easily hidden with moisturizer and sometimes it is not visible at all.

How does Diamond Glow™ work?
Diamond Glow Dermal infusion is the only procedure that provides both deep, controlled exfoliation and delivery of skin-specific dermaceuticals under pressure. The controlled vacuum pressure pulls the skin into a chamber in the hand piece. The suction allows a consistent and uniform exfoliation (can’t over or under treat based on operator technique) and the removal of impurities from clogged pores. At the same time, pneumatic pressure promotes deep penetration of specific therapeutic solutions down to the dermal junction where they can do the most good. Diamond Glow™ has specific dermaceuticals for hydrating, lightening and acne.

What should I expect during the Diamond Glow™ Dermalinfusion procedure?
No prior preparation is needed. The procedure, performed by our professionally trained estheticians, is comfortable and relaxing. It lasts about 20 – 30 minutes. Sunblock will be applied. The skin will feel tight, healthy and smooth. The moisture of the topicals also leaves your skin with a cool, refreshed feeling. Your skin will have a warm, pinkish glow that will usually fade in about 30 minutes, leaving your skin looking healthy. Make-up can be applied immediately.

What is a Dermaplane facial?
A Dermaplane facial is just that: a therapeutic and relaxing facial with the additional benefits of dermaplaning exfoliation. Your skin will be soft, brighter, smoother, and glowing for weeks.

What is the SkinPen™?
We are pleased to introduce our new SkinPen™ dermal micro-needling treatment at Del Mar Aesthetic Clinic. The SkinPen™ is a revolutionary cordless dermal micro-needling device with several advantages over previous generation anti-aging devices such as lasers and dermal needle rollers. Thousands of controlled micro-punctures into the dermis activate the body’s own natural restorative healing processes to transform blemished and irregular textured tissue into smoother, clearer, more vibrant skin.

What is Micro-Needling?
Automated Micro-Needling (also known as Collagen Induction Therapy or CIT) is a new innovation in aesthetic medicine for treating the appearance of fine lines, scars and improvement of the skin’s overall appearance / texture.

The procedure is performed by one of our professionally trained licensed estheticians. Tiny needles rapidly move in and out of the tip of a handheld device as it is passed over the skin in a gliding motion. The needles produce thousands of micro-injuries to the skin to induce the skin’s natural repair process. Stimulation of collagen and elastin production results in improvement of the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and irregular texture. SkinPen™ also creates superficial micro-channels help the penetration of certain therapeutic topical serums based on your desired results.  SkinPen™ is the most advanced medical-grade automated micro-needling device on the market.

What can be treated with SkinPen™?
SkinPen™ can be used to enhance the skin on all parts of the body; Face, neck, décolleté, arms, hands, legs, abdomen and back. It can be used to treat a wide range of conditions:

  • Fine Lines and moderate wrinkles
  • Scars from acne, trauma, or surgery
  • Uneven skin tone or texture
  • Stretch marks
  • Treats Photo-damage and premature aging
  • Treats Skin laxity
  • Treats Enlarged pores

How Does SkinPen™ compare with other Skin Rejuvenation treatments?
Unlike lasers, SkinPen™ breaks up pigment mechanically and stimulates the collagen formation without heat or light, making it safe for all skin types. It is more comfortable than many other skin rejuvenation treatments and has a very low complication rate.  SkinPen™ treatments have a relatively short downtime. Patients are typically red for 24 hours or less. SkinPen™ can penetrate deeper than chemical peels or microdermabrasion techniques making it more effective for deeper acne scars and deeper pigmentation irregularities.

How is the procedure done?
After your skin is cleansed and a numbing cream has been applied, a sterile needle-tip containing 12 tiny micro-needles is attached to the SkinPen™. Your skincare professional will apply a thin layer of topical gel to your skin and select the appropriate treatment depth based on your unique needs. Next, in a single motion, the pen will be gently pressed against the skin while simultaneously gliding until the entire treatment area has been covered. This process results in thousands of superficial microscopic channels throughout the entire treatment area. The procedure takes 15-30 minutes depending on the size of the area treated.

What is the downtime?
Immediately after the treatment you will notice a bright redness to the skin. The total healing time depends on the SkinPen™ setting used and the number of overlapping passes your esthetician performs. Patients may be red for up to 2 to 4 days, but many patients heal completely in as little as 24 hours. Your esthetician will recommend specialty medical-grade skincare products can help to speed up the healing process. Sunblock applications is important

When will I see the results?
Patients notice an immediate “glow” to their skin. Visible changes to the skin develop over the course of several days and weeks. Results continue to improve up to 6 months after the treatment as collagen production continues.

How many treatments will I need?
Some patients only require a single treatment, once per year to achieve optimal results. However, it is recommended for most patients to receive a series of 2-3 treatments spaced about 6-8 weeks apart. For patients with deep wrinkles, advanced photo-aging, stretch marks or acne scars it is recommended to receive 6-8 sessions at 6 week intervals.

What skin types would benefit from SkinMedica® skin care products?
There are SkinMedica® products that are formulated to be used on all skin types and most skin conditions including sensitive and post-procedure skin. We recommend you always ask your physician which products and regimen will best address your skin type and concerns.

What is “photodamage”?

Photodamage to the skin is caused by exposure to harmful ultraviolet light. Photodamage can be acute, as in sunburn, or more commonly, chronic, due to gradual changes in the skin caused by an accumulation of sun exposure throughout one’s life. Sun exposure is by far the most influential environmental factor affecting aging of the skin.

What are the causes of wrinkles?
Lines and wrinkles are caused by degenerative changes in the proteins of the skin’s infrastructure such as loss of stored antioxidants and reduction in collagen. Movement of the skin resulting in creases over time also causes wrinkles.

What are the causes of age spots?
Age spots are also known as sun spots or solar lentigines. Age spots are associated with cumulative sun exposure. Sun spots mostly appear in areas consistently exposed to sunlight such as the back of the hands, the forearms, neck, chest and face. The pigment producing cells in the skin (melanocytes) is stimulated to produce more pigment when exposed to ultraviolet rays.

How can I maintain the health of my skin?

Using sun protection and appropriate skin care products containing specialty ingredients is essential in maintaining healthy skin.

What role does my physician play in my skin care regimen?

Just as your physician plays an important role in your overall health, he or she also plays a key role in helping you maintain healthy skin. With any skin care regimen it’s important to consult with your dermatologist or skin care specialist. He or she can analyze your skin care routine, tell you what’s working and determine what you can do to further enhance the health and beauty of your skin.

Which product(s) should I use after having a procedure?

Always ask your physician for the appropriate products to use after a procedure since the regimen may differ depending on the type of procedure received.

Are your products safe to use if I have Rosacea?

What is Latisse®?
Latisse® is a solution you apply to the base of the upper eyelashes that has proven to grow lashes, making them appear more prominent, longer, thicker and darker. The lashes grow gradually over time with some people beginning to see longer lashes in about four weeks, with full growth at 16 weeks.

How does it work?
We believe that Latisse® works by increasing the growth cycle (anagen) phase of your eyelash hair cycle. Anagen is the growth phase of all hair. We believe that it increased the length of the anagen phase and the number of hairs in this growth phase.

How do I apply Latisse®?
Latisse® is a treatment you apply yourself each evening to the base of the upper eyelashes. Each LATISSE® kit contains detailed instructions for proper application. You should remove any makeup, clean the upper eyelids and remove their contact lenses, if applicable. Contact lenses can be placed back in the eye after 15 minutes following the application of LATISSE®. Then, using the single-use applicator brush provided in the package, one drop of LATISSE® is placed on the applicator brush and applied to the base of the upper eyelid lash margin (DO NOT APPLY in your eye or the lower lash line as excess hair growth outside the treatment area may occur). The same process is repeated using a fresh applicator brush to avoid cross contamination. Be careful not to allow the tip of the bottle or applicator to contact surrounding structures, fingers or any other unintended surface in order to avoid contamination by common bacteria known to cause infections. After applying, any excess fluid should be blotted off with a tissue. For best results, Latisse® needs to be used once a day for 16 weeks. Using Latisse® more than once a day will not grow your lashes faster or improve the effectiveness of the product.

What are the potential side effects?
The most common side effects after using Latisse® solution are an itching sensation in the eyes and/or eye redness. Latisse® solution may cause other less common side effects, which typically occur on the skin close to where Latisse® is applied, or in the eyes. These include skin darkening, eye irritation, and dryness of the eyes and redness of the eyelids.

Can Latisse® harm my eyes?
Latisse® is an ophthalmic solution. If any solution gets into the eye, it is not expected to cause harm. You do not need to rinse your eyes. Latisse® is not an eye drop. DO NOT APPLY in your eye or to the lower lid.

How soon will I see results? How long will the results last?
When using Latisse®, the growth is gradual over time. Some may start to notice longer lashes after about a month and many should experience full results in approximately four months. If use of Latisse is discontinued, eyelashes will return to their previous appearance over the course of several weeks to months.
